8 Funny Posts 4 A Grin From Dennys Blogs - 30 June 2010

*** When times are tough what do you do? Laughter is the best stress reliever! Here are 8 posts from this week's posts at Denny's blogs for you to enjoy.

Cup of coffee from Brazil by il Quoquo @ flickr

From Denny: Between Colbert and Stewart, well, let's just say they have BP's shenanigans covered. Nothing gets past them!

In my ongoing effort to provide stress relief when the national conversation is so depressing - because of the BP Gulf Coast oil spill, a fragile economy and politicians who continually refuse to do right by the American people - we all need to keep laughing our way through these times until they get better. Trust that times will get better and they will. Until then, while we are in transition, we must develop coping skills for managing daily stress like making sure we are laughing often.

This is one of those times when it is true that "the pen is mightier than the sword" for the right kind of writing can bring relief to thousands in one moment over the internet. Pretty cool when you think about it. How many people can accomplish so much out of thin air? :)

Posts For This Weeks Cartoons, Funny World Soccer Cartoons - 26 June 2010

*** Check out the fun world soccer cartoons and click on more links to funny cartoon posts for this week!

From Denny: Come check out the best of this week's political cartoons, lampooning politicians, Life and sports. Instead of paging through 50 websites pages to look at one cartoon at a time, I've embedded a dozen or more per post to enjoy easily. Can you tell I find it annoying to load page after page just to see all the latest cartoons? :)

These were only a few world soccer cup cartoons available for embedding. To see more just click on the link under the cartoons to take you to the cartoonists' sites. It seems like every night on the TV news we would hear those vuvuzela horns making their joyful noise while they blew out everyone's eardrums. Cartoonists had a lot of fun with that cultural icon.

Congrats go the USA soccer team as they made us proud. It was an amazing run with upset after upset. We got some bad referee calls when it was obvious the gambling syndicate phoned in how they wanted the game to be called. America's team still went forward to win after win. This week it was Ghana's turn to win against America and knock us out of the race for the world cup.

America's team went into this competition with little hope and fewer expectations. As far as Americans are concerned our team was a Cinderella team. They succeeded in winning our hearts and ignited a huge interest in this country for the game of soccer. From my corner of the world, I'd say your game was well played, guys!

Living Art Exhibit: Public Play at NY Times Square Pianos

*** Check out the latest fun thing to do this summer while walking down your city street.

From Denny: Just when you need a little soul refreshment along comes a living art exhibit. This was such a clever idea! The artist set up old pianos on concrete sidewalks and invited the public to play whatever they wanted. It was amazing how some gifted music students would sit down and play for an hour uninterrupted, lost in the music. Other professional musicians would entertain the crowds just for the impromptu fun of it. What a treat for folks passing by on their lunch hour or way back to work!

Exploding Number of Young Widows in the World

*** Former First Lady of Britain, Cherie Blair, champions the millions of young widows of the world, shockingly many are right here in the United States.

From Denny: Former First Lady of Britain, Cherie Blair, is calling attention to and focusing upon the plight of widows, especially young widows with children, all over the world. The statistics will astound you as to how many widows living in abject poverty there are today globally.

Normally, when we think of a "widow" we presume her to be elderly and is cared for by a son or daughter in her old age. Such a caring attitude does not await most young widows, especially in places like India and Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern countries.

In Asia and the Near East, it is a social stigma to be a widow. What's worse is these women, especially in Afghanistan, are not allowed to work to put food on the table for their children. As a result, they end up in terrible crushing poverty. They live sad lives suffering terrible diseases, malnutrition and abuse. It's no wonder those National Geographic pictures always show their faces to be so sad.

The reasons for widowhood? HIV, AIDS, war.

Surprisingly, the largest number of widows in the world are in the United States, China and India. Afghanistan has the highest number of widows in relation to marriage age women.

Current count of widows:

China - 44 million

India - 42 million

United States - 15 million

Right now former First Lady of Britain, Cherie Blair, is asking the United Nations to focus attention upon an often overlooked segment of society: widows. She wants the international organization to create International Widows Day.

Out of 245 million widows, over 100 million live in extreme poverty which leads to malnutrition, disease and abuse - according to The Loomba Foundation. Cherie Blair is President of The Loomba Foundation. Check out her website to see how you can help your fellow women.

Good News: Kids Sell Lemon Aid 4 Pelicans Hurt in the Gulf

*** How kids are impacted by this oil spill disaster and what they decided to do about it.

From Denny: It's difficult to watch the oil spill news these days when you see these poor Pelicans in my state of Louisiana all covered in oil. You wonder if they will survive. To date over a million dead birds have been found. How many more there were will never be known because BP blocked access for months to beaches littered with dead animals so the media was unable to film it.

This young boy, who lives in the middle of the state, Alexandria, Louisiana, decided he wasn't going to sit on the sidelines. He was determined he was going to figure out how to raise some money to help the oil slicked birds. When parents try to teach their kids how to be environmentally aware and care about others outside of themselves, this had to be one proud moment for this parent. He is just a regular kid who wanted to do something extraordinary. Take a listen:

Oldest Living Woman in World Now in Indonesia

*** The oldest woman in the world is an astounding 145 years old!

Formerly the oldest living woman was Eugenie Blanchard thought to be oldest at age 114. No photo provided for Katemi of Indonesia.

From Denny: The oldest woman in the world is an astounding 145 years old! Katemi was found to be living in Riau Province, Indonesia.

Census takers visited her home and could not believe what they were told. The previous record of oldest woman was held by Jeanne Calment of France who was 122 years old and lived from 1875 to 1997.

Census takers listed the Indonesian Katemi's year of birth as 1865, you know, the same year American President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. It was also the same year the children's book Alice in Wonderland was published.

Apparently, the original census takers took her year of birth on face value and recorded it. Not until the information reached the head office in Dumai, Indonesia, that it was questioned and investigators sent out to verify.

While the French woman's life is well documented, apparently Katemi's does not enjoy such a paper trail. Hers are oral records of family members who know the family genealogy. They were interviewed by the special team of investigators in Bukit Batrem village in Dumai Timor subdistrict. They definitely wanted to double check to make sure there was no mistake recorded.

Can you imagine what an incredible moment this must have been to interview these people? The team first interviewed Katemi's younger sister, Ama. Her age is listed as age 98. Ama told investigators that Katemi was number two of three children born in Wono Bondo, Pacitan district, East Java, back as long ago as 1865.

Then the team interviewed Katemi's adopted daughter, Mimi, who is age 70. Mimi related how she knew her mother's true age because she was told by her uncle, Karyo, Katemi's brother. Karyo lived to the very ripe old age of 165.

The family history and birth date of Katemi was also confirmed by three of Katemi's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Katemi liked to tell stories of her youth which occurred during the Portuguese, Dutch and Japanese colonial eras, according to Daryulis, census coordinator in Dumai Timor. “All these statements were considered insufficient to support the fact, and therefore the team tried to obtain more information from her neighbors.”

Two of Katemi's neighbors had confirmed Katemi had lived in their village since 1980 but had not aged significantly. Sutejo is 45 and Dwi is 50 years old. “So I think it is quite possible that Katemi is 145 years old, because she has a 98 year-old younger sister and a daughter aged over 70 years,” Dwi said.

Looks like the family, neighbors and villagers were convincing as Katemi's birth date remains on record. The census takers were amazed.

There have been records verified over the years of people living this long in places like the Near East, Asia and Eastern Europe. Obviously, anything is possible, even a very long life.

Anti-Aging Summer Drinks From CBS and Health Magazine

*** Summer drinks that are healthy and fight aging from Health Magazine.

From Denny: Who ever thought drinking fruit drinks could help to fight the signs of aging? Health Magazine's senior food and nutrition editor Frances Largeman-Roth, a registered dietitian, show us how delicious it can be to take care of your health and look good in the process.

First things first. When the hot summer arrives it's easy to reach for sugary drinks and processed foods. Bad idea. Sugar and processed foods age us, especially the skin. Here are some tasty alternatives to help slow down the clock.

Summer is a great time to pay special attention to our health and utilize fresh produce from local farmers markets and grocers. "You can stay away from processed foods all summer because of all this stuff that's ripe and accessible -- no reason to grab stuff in a package," Largeman-Roth says. "If it's processed, most processed foods will have preservatives and are high in sodium, which we know we should cut back on."

Who can benefit from these anti-aging drinks? Well, everyone. Why wait until you are middle-aged before deciding to take care of your skin? Actually, Health Magazine developed these recipes with the average female reader in mind of the age range of 35-50 years old. Largeman-Roth adds, "But they could be great for anyone, young or old, male or female. They are a refreshing and healthy way to get more whole foods into your diet."

These ingredients are recommended to be eaten or drunk at least once a day to receive maximum benefit. "The caveat with beverages is that people tend to over-consume," according to Largeman-Roth. "We try to keep the portion size smart. You don't want to drink your calories, so make sure this is part of your daily calorie intake."

Watch CBS News Videos Online

From CBS, About Health Magazine's anti-aging drinks:

1. Tropical Treat Smoothie

Active anti-age ingredient: MATCHA.

Why it's good for you: Rich in nutrients, antioxidants and chlorophyll, the health benefits of matcha exceed those of other green teas-drinkers ingest the whole leaf (in powdered form), not just the brewed water. One glass of matcha is the equivalent of 10 glasses of green tea in terms of nutritional value and antioxidant content. Also it has no calories.

The powerful antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in matcha green tea is 137 times greater than the amount of EGCG in regular green tea.

The ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) of antioxidants within matcha green tea is exponentially higher than other foods known for their high antioxidant levels such as blueberries and spinach. The ORAC rating of matcha is 1300 units/g, compared to 105 units/g for pomegranates and 91 units/g for wild blueberries.

2. Very Cherre Spritzer -- (Not available elsewhere online) -

Active anti-age ingredient: CHERRY JUICE.

Why it's good for you: Inflammation inside your body leads to premature aging and illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. That means foods that fight inflammation-like tart cherries-could add years to your life. In a recent study, researchers found that giving whole tart cherries to lab rats reduced two common markers of blood vessel inflammation by up to 50 percent. The cherry eaters also gained less weight and experienced big drops in cholesterol.

3. Double C Smoothie

Active anti-age ingredient: VITAMIN C

Why it's good for you: This smoothie has 158mg of vitamin C, which is more than 100% of the RDA. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and helps fight free-radical damage-both inside the body and when applied to the skin.

4. Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie

Active anti-age ingredient: PEANUTS (RESVERATROL). The first major (and all-natural) anti-aging phytochemical.

Where you'll find it: We've all heard about the benefits of resveratrol in wine, but that's not the only source. The roots, stems, leaves, shells, and seeds of peanut plans Are also high in this antioxidant. Peanut butter is a great source!

Why it's good for you: Preliminary research suggests that resveratrol can lengthen the lives of mice. Will it work for you? It's too soon to know, but red grapes (plus mixed berries, peanuts, and a little red wine) are the best sources of this promising ingredient.

This magic phytochemical shows signs of preventing damage to blood vessels, reducing "bad" cholesterol, and preventing blood clots.

5. Blackberry-Banana Slim Down Smoothie

Active anti-age ingredient: BANANA

Why it's good for you: Bananas aren't just for making a bowl of bran cereal less boring. They are rich in vitamin B-6 something your body may need more of as you age, especially if you're a woman. Researchers found that women of childbearing age, particularly those taking oral contraceptives, are much more likely than men to have inadequate amounts of vitamin B6. The nutrient is necessary for estrogen metabolism, researchers say, and the Pill adds more estrogen to your body.

B6 is also vital for red blood cell function, a healthy immune system, and normal brain activity; low levels can lead to a form of anemia. Another B benefit: Research in the journal Neurobiology shows that boosting B12 intake could reduce the risks of Alzheimer's. Bananas, baked potatoes, and chicken are good sources of B6; eggs, meat, and milk are high in B12. Bonus: Bananas help keep you full with resistant starch!

12 Hidden Reasons 4 Fatigue and How to Fight Fatigue

*** Check out what Dr. Jennifer Ashton tells us are other factors that may be causing us to feel tired - besides not getting enough sleep.

Hidden fatigue factor: What other reasons can explain fatigue besides the obvious one of not enough sleep? What can you do to fight fatigue?

1 - Breakfast - You may not be eating a nutritious breakfast every day and getting hydrated well throughout the day. Your body needs quality fuel to run on all day so make sure you eat some light protein like an egg white omelet, complex carbs like whole wheat toast and some fruit to get you started. The goal is to maintain a steady level for your blood sugar as this will fight off fatigue beautifully.

2 - Anemia - Most women of reproductive age suffer from some anemia as do pregnant women. The important thing is to find out why you are anemic. Is it just a diet that can easily be corrected or is it something more serious? Is there an issue with heavy or excessive menstrual bleeding? If so, then find out the root cause and fix it.

"Anemia is when your body doesn't have enough red blood cells -- which provides oxygen to the body tissues and organs. Women can be more likely to get iron-deficiency anemia during menstruation and/or pregnancy," said Ashton, "According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), more than 10 percent of women ages 12 to 49 are iron deficient. Anemia can be a result of a poor diet -- a diet is consistently low in iron and vitamins, especially folate, put you at risk for anemia."

3 - Several meals daily - Make sure you eat several small frequent meals all day long as opposed to waiting for one large woofing it down meal where you can overload your digestion system and get tired. Eating too little can cause fatigue just as easily as eating the wrong foods.

4 - Foods to include in your diet - Make sure you are taking in a diet rich in foods to build red blood cells. For iron, add beans and meat to your diet. Folate, is also important to fighting fatigue. Add green leafy vegetables to your diet. Vitamin B12 is found in dairy and meat.

5 - Rest breaks - Take frequent 10 minute breaks daily, even a short nap to refresh and restore. Keeping a fast paced day will create lingering fatigue. Short rest breaks frequently will combat that fatigue.

6 - Underactive Thyroid (hypothyroidism) - It's an endocrine gland that when out of balance can cause you to feel fatigued. The thyroid controls the speed of your metabolism. Usually, it affects about 17 percent of women over the age of 60 and some men. If you are gaining weight and feel sluggish yet are not eating more calories to explain the weight gain then see your doctor to get checked out.

7 - Depression - Take note that you can feel depressed if you have not been resting enough - and often - or not been getting a quality night's sleep over an extended period of time. When you rule out this situation then see your doctor.

8 - Sleep-related disorder like Sleep Apnea - This is a possibility if you are unable to get a good night's sleep over a long period of time. Sleep Apnea can cause you to actually stop breathing for a few moments while you are asleep and it can happen several times a night.

You may never remember what happened during the night. Sleep Apnea will cause you to feel fatigued even when you wake up in the morning. What explains the fatigue is that each time you stop breathing momentarily you wake up long enough to break your sleep cycle yet you are not aware of doing so. Sometimes, the only clue to this sleep disorder is your constant fatigue even though you spent plenty of time sleeping.

A lifestyle change is in order to deal with this disorder. Losing weight is a must for better breathing at night while you sleep. Quit smoking too to lose the fatigue.

Untreated sleep apnea can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. Most people benefit from over the counter solutions to help keep the nasal airways open while sleeping since those muscles relax and swell when we sleep. In severe cases surgery can be necessary to open the airways.

9 - Undiagnosed Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)- Most women expect the usual symptoms of burning or a sense of an urgency to urinate as tell tale signs this is an issue. Actually, fatigue may be the only symptom this may be a problem. See a doctor to rule out. UTIs are caused by bacteria living in the urinary tract because of improper toilet hygiene or even from sexual intercourse.

10 - Too much caffeine - Lay off the coffee and soft drinks. When most people feel their energy ebbing late in the afternoon, they grab a soft drink or a cup of coffee as a pick me up. Unfortunately, there are those folks that too much caffeine in their system creates fatigue. If this is your issue then the chocolate and tea has to go too - and even some medications that contain caffeine. You might be pleasantly surprised these sources were the reason for your unexplained fatigue.

11 - Hidden Food Intolerances - This is not about food allergies of which only about 5 percent of the population suffers. However, even a mild food intolerance can make you feel sleepy. If you keep eating the problem food over an extended period of time you will end up feeling downright exhausted. So, keep a diet journal to see what you have been eating lately and see what's changed or what you can change in order to get your energy back.

12 - Undiagnosed Heart Disease - Activity that used to be easy for you in the past but is now difficult and exhausting may be a sign of heart disease. If you suffer an overwhelming fatigue for doing simple yard work, vacuuming the house or commuting from work each day, then heart disease should be considered. In fact, your heart may be sending out an SOS help call to get you to seek medical attention. Talk to your doctor if this is the case.

Think about your reasons for fatigue

Stop and think about chugging that next energy drink or cup of coffee when you feel fatigued. Are you pushing your heart too much? Are you diet deficit? Are you sleep deprived? When enough rest and changes to a proper diet after a couple of weeks does not help the fatigue it's time to see your doctor.

Cartoons: Global Warming Al Gores Surpise Divorce - 5 June 2010

*** Al and Tipper Gore's divorce has a lot of people questioning their own relationships.

From Denny: Couples all over America were shocked this week to learn of the surprise Gore breakup. It caused a lot of people to stop and consider their own relationships. With this chaotic economy there are a lot of people wondering if they would be happy if they broke up. It's best not to allow outside circumstances to influence how you feel about your partner. It's also wise to stop and examine yourself to see if your perception is influenced by unresolved issues from your past. After that, then consider if you and your partner are still right for each other.

No one ever expected the Gore marriage to break up after lasting 40 years but there it is. It took a lot of people by surprise. It's shocking. What happened? Well, the Gores are not talking details but there are a few factors to think about like her life long depression, their youngest child, a son, almost died and the strenuous life of politics that is no place for a gentle creative person like Tipper.

Most often when a child dies the marriage dissolves quickly into divorce as the divorce rate is high. As in the case of the John and Elizabeth Edwards messy marriage they did lose their oldest son. As in the case of a death of a child there is one spouse who blames the other and also cannot let go of their grief, driving away their spouse. The grief is so suffocating and the blaming and screaming so frequent and loud no one can live with that level of fury.

It's quite common with these stresses for one spouse to seek comfort elsewhere. At some point we all have to look at ourselves and use our wills to quit blaming the other person and learn to let go of our grief. Bitterness, blaming, slamming guilt at others does nothing to build or preserve a relationship. We must learn to forgive and love, really love - and love the people, the other children, who are still here with us.

The most surprising marriage is Bill and Hillary Clinton. If anyone had reason to blame and fury it's Hillary. Yet, she dug deep inside her spiritual self and found a way to forgive and still love. Granted, she isn't stupid and knows her husband's flaws. But, in the end, "ain't nobody who's perfect" and we learn to focus on their best attributes. Real unconditional love, not the constant high maintenance emotional dramas, is what nurtures a relationship into true happiness

Take a look at what a few cartoonists had to say, some introspective, some obviously do not like Al Gore. None of us will ever know what really went on between them as a marriage is private, even when one seeks publicity like Elizabeth Edwards. Notably absent is any comment from John Edwards. He takes a lot of slams in the press. For them, they need to quit with the War of the Roses (remember that movie?) and quit embarrassing their children publicly.

No matter what one spouse has done or not done all the situation ends up is as public bitter bickering. What is helpful about that? The Edwards could take a page out of the Gores playbook and use a lot more class about breaking up in a peaceful manner.

From Denny: This was a light week for writing as I spent so much time watching a lot of BP oil spill news from everywhere trying to catch details of what was filtered out of the mainstream copycat media. This is a shifting situation minute by minute as BP tries to twist the truth and manipulate the media to report their lies. It's like a giant shell game from a multinational corporation grifter.

Those of us living in Louisiana and others on the Gulf Coast are committed to holding our government AND most especially BP's mean little toes to the hot coals until they comply fully. The philosophy of "The Minimum Acceptable" from Big Business arrogance and cavalier handling of an environmental and economic disaster is unacceptable in America. If this was happening to the British shores I would be just as outraged and pushing back just as hard.
