Lampooning Perfectionists - Cheeky Quote Day 28 Oct 2009

I went cruising the web looking for more funny chocolate quotes than I already have stashed on Romancing The Chocolate blog and ran into funny Sandra Boynton's site. She has a new movie short just released a couple of days ago. B. B. King sings alongside his famous sidekick Lucille.

Let's all support her as this is her first movie debut. The little documentary that sidekicks it is interesting as to how many people it really takes, all the hoops they have to jump through, just to make a tiny film - and she made it funny too!

Poem: thoughts for the heart and soul

Once you see the beauty in yourself you will see the world through a news lens...

thoughts for the heart and soul: "~blondePoet says and i quote: Live, love, laugh, and reach out your hand, for there may be no tomorrow.Be all you can ,while you can'"

By Uriel @ HubPages

From Denny: A lovely poem from a friend on HubPages about not wasting one minute of your life to live it to the fullest!

Video: Making a Difference - Bicycles Helping People Get to Work in Tough Economy

From Denny: This is a really cool guy, a bicycle shop owner in South Dakota, took the idea from the national Cash for Clunkers and employed it for a local charity. He found a way to help finance a Bikes for Work program to help people who have no transportation be able to get to work.

With 20 million homes in foreclosure across America and millions out of work, there are still those who may have finally found work but at a much reduced income, many times up to 70% less. While people are adjusting to a chaotic economy and uncertain job environment there are still quality people out there like this man trying to do his part for his fellow man. This is such a heart-warming story!

Video: Latest News From the CDC About Flu Vaccine Availability, Prez Obama Declares Flu National Emergency

From Denny: While this flu tends to be one from which most people recover successfully, there are those who do not fare as well and must have access to the vaccine. There is double the death rate from this flu illness. The fact that it is difficult to incubate the vaccine without the usual egg-based version has slowed down ability to deliver the vaccine in large doses for a huge population like America.

The Republicans may be dancing in the streets with glee about destroying big government's ability to mobilize and centralize for the benefit of the population but all they have accomplished is to hurt themselves as well. Bush and Cheney, of the last and most despised White House administration in American history, basically broke the American government on a lot of levels. Most especially Bush released American drug companies from having to produce seasonal and annual vaccine doses large enough for the entire public, stockpile it and have it ready on time. The drug company lobbyists whined about spending money on the public and so Bush gave in to them.

What's happened is that when you abruptly end a continual supply of this magnitude it can take years to start back up and get it running again. A few months is simply not enough for something on this scale. As it is, President Obama is making do with what is available and patch-working the rest from other drug companies around the world to pool all the resources to produce enough vaccine. Take extra precautions while you are awaiting your vaccine if you fall into the vulnerable groups.

2 Great and Easy Pecan Bundt Cake Recipes

2 Easy Cake Recipes: Louisiana Praline Toffee Bundt Cake, Southern Livings Popular Praline Cake

From Denny: Was looking through my years old newspaper food sections files, before throwing them out, decided to digitize some of the better recipes. This one is an awesome one for using fresh pecans that are in season right now. It came from a regional church cookbook, those cookbook equivalents of little "hole in the wall" great cooking restaurants that are difficult to find.

Also, provided is an online resource for purchasing Louisiana pecans. This farmer is friendly and a real delight every weekend when he comes in to the downtown Baton Rouge Farmers' Market to sell his products. Reasonably priced too. Take a look!

Busy Day at The Social Poets, Posts on Dan Browns Book The Lost Symbol and Obama

From Denny: There's so much going on with the news coverage about Dan Brown's new book, The Lost Symbol. He sure has tapped into the popularity of conspiracy theories and fast-paced mystery thrillers.

The Today Show both interviewed him and did some short news stories as clues for unraveling the mysteries in the book, great fun! Take a look.

Video: Pregnant Mother Dies of Swine Flu Misdiagnosis

From Denny: This sad story of a young mother who died from swine flu is a perfect reason why pregnant women might want to think seriously about taking the flu shot. If not, at least when experiencing flu-like symptoms make sure you get Tamiflu to help battle the illness. What happened here is a tragedy that should never have happened but for the doctors' negligence. I smell law suit. Fortunately, at least the baby was delivered healthy. Take a look if you missed this news segment last night.

Cool Video: Prez Obama Honored for Nobel in Sand Sculpture

From Denny: This is an Oddball segment from Keith Olbermann's Countdown show. Since it's October we get to watch folks in Lincoln County, Maine smash huge pumpkins. They put the several hundred pound pumpkins on a crane high in the air and then drop them onto decommissioned old police cars. Sort of gives you some satisfaction for that speeding or parking ticket you felt you never deserved from whatever decade... :)

What's really cool is the incredible sand sculpture a world renowned sand artist in India did on a local beach in Puri, India recently. The artist is Sudarshan Patanaik and his sculpture is four feet high, depicting President Obama's head embedded in a Nobel Peace Prize medal with an accompanying dove and a message pro Peace. This man is quite the artist! So glad a film crew went out there and recorded it; maybe he will do a painting or print photo to sell as posters? Beautifully done as well as a political statement art.

Video: Roadblocks to Health Care Reform, Finance Committee Finally Passes Bill

From Denny: Well, one hurdle down and a few more to go. Now the Senate has to merge what the House wants, what the Finance Committee doesn't want and the Senate expects.

There are a lot of roadblocks: employers, employees, the unions, the lobbyists all want something different.

Keep your fingers crossed this doesn't end up a watered down version of just about nothing worth having just to appease the insurance industry lobbyists. I don't know why the Democrats keep catering to the Republicans when only one actually voted for this bill. As a group the Republicans continue to refuse to vote for health care reform so why does their opinion matter?

Video: Q & A on Swine Flu and more

From Denny: Latest Q & A about swine flu, answered by Dr. Jennifer Shu, who is just had swine flu, having caught it from one of her patients. Guess she sure understands what it feels like to have this flu! She talks about handling a family member with the flu to keep the others healthy and suggestions for children staying healthy.

She answers some nasal cycle trivia I bet you didn't know any more than I did. Really "necessary important info." :) The things people ask; sometimes you wonder if they are yanking CNN's chain...

Funny Halloween Quotes, Halloween Cartoon

This is cute: instead of being known as the black sheep of the family this guy is known as the black sheet - it is Halloween! :)

From Denny: Tomorrow is Cheeky Quote Day! over at The Social Poets. I started researching funny Halloween quotes. Can I tell you there were very few of them? Quite surprising! I did find some great little jokes and funny ghost stories to share. Here's a sampling:

Quotes

* I'll bet living in a nudist colony takes all the fun out of Halloween. – Charles Swartz

* Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain. - J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* This Halloween the most popular mask is the Arnold Schwarzenegger mask. And the best part? With a mouth full of candy you will sound just like him. - Conan O'Brien

Video: Some Suggestions for Boosting Your Immune System During Flu Season

From Denny: The number one thing to do besides take the flu shot if you have an edgy immune system is to guard your diet. Keep it full of lean protein as that is what helps support the immune system. Another group of foods to keep in mind are those that help the liver process toxins like green leafy vegetables. Also, during the flu season add foods like apples which are good to your sinuses, lungs and digestive track. Apples help dry up excessive mucus from the winter wind sniffles, the normal cold or the flu.

Cheeky Quote Day Over at The Social Poets 7 Oct 2009

From Denny: Every Wednesday is Cheeky Quote Day over at The Social Poets blog where I put up whatever crazy funny quotes I find for the week. This week the challenge was to find funny quotes about poetry. Let me tell you, that really turned out to be a challenge! Not too many poets have a great sense of humor! Fortunately, we can always count on funny guys like Oscar Wilde, Carl Sandburg, Robert Frost and Walt Whitman among others.

Here's a sampling of 5 quotes for you to enjoy:

* I could no more define poetry than a terrier can define a rat. - A. E. Housman

* If Galileo had said in verse that the world moved, the Inquisition might have let him alone. - Thomas Hardy

* Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things. - T.S. Eliot, Tradition and the Individual Talent, 1919

* Poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese. - G.K. Chesterton

* There is the view that poetry should improve your life. I think people confuse it with the Salvation Army. - John Ashbery

Our New Life Expectancy and Dementia Rated Higher for Professional Athletes

From Denny: According to the folks who keep tabs on this kind of thing, babies born today are expected to live to be 100 years old if they come from a developed country. Sounds good to have some positive news of late!

And did you see this about dementia for professional football players is far higher than the regular population? Pretty frightening stats and a real deal breaker for mothers allowing their sons to go into athletics for college. Scientists are now discovering that head trauma is related to severe depression and dementia. I had no idea our athletes suffered from these problems though I often wondered about the long term effects of concussions:

Updates on the Swine Flu: Rate of Spread and Arrival Dates of Vaccine

Here's the latest news over the past few days about the spread of swine flu. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has now confirmed the swine flu is spreading rapidly around the country:

Tuesday the first doses of spray vaccine against swine flu should be arriving and injection version by the end of the week. Looks like the government has been working hard to get the production ramped up as this delivery is two weeks ahead of time.

Do You Feel Buffeted About By the Winds of Life? Heres 5 Thought Provoking Solutions

From Denny: With all the intense and dangerous weather issues going on globally I looked around for some interesting wind quotes. Wind is often used as a metaphor for politics and the experience of living, enduring and triumphing in Life.

Here are a couple regarding wind as a metaphor for politics:

Quotes

* A great wind is blowing, and that gives you either imagination or a headache. - Queen Catherine II

* I've seen public opinion shift like the wind and put out the very fire it lighted. - Rachel Field

Here are a few regarding our interaction with what Life brings us:

Quotes

* Botanists say that trees need the powerful March winds to flex their trunks and main branches, so the sap is drawn up to nourish the budding leaves. Perhaps we need the gales of life in the same way, though we dislike enduring them. - Jane Truax

* Let mystery have its place in you; do not be always turning up your whole soil with the ploughshare of self-examination, but leave a little fallow corner in your heart ready for any seed the winds may bring... - Henri Frederic Amiel

* If the winds of fortune are temporarily blowing against you, remember that you can harness them and make them carry you toward your definite purpose, throught the use of your imagination. - Napolean Hill

Here's what I have today over at Dennys Global Politics:

Video: Earthquakes, Flooding, Tsunamis, Hurricanes Intensify Global Problems Affecting Millions - latest news videos, eye witness accounts of the tsunami in American Samoa - and speculation as to why this violent weather is happening.

Video: Making a Difference - American High School Kids From Chicago Helping Casablanca Poor

From Denny: This is a wonderful story about people helping other people clear across the world. Chicago's sister city is Casablanca in Morocco and has been for over 25 years. These are high school kids who want to work against poverty.

They visited Casablanca and met an astounding local man who is revered by many for his work among the poor. What is most impressive is how much support he has given to young women to get educated and succeed. Now that's not something you expect out of an Islamic culture. As it stands now, the most recent stats have just been released, regardless of religion, that 30% of women worldwide are abused. That's billions of people suffering. The figures are much higher in Islamic countries. To see a man devote so much of his life and resources to helping young women develop warms the heart.

From Denny: Now here's a lady who really understands the concept of taking years to finish healing. It took 15 years of surgeries to put her body back together after a terrible subway train accident. She is a professional classical musician and to watch her smile from her heart inspires you too!
