Idiot Eye Lash Beauty Taking Precedent Over Eye Health

From Denny: I've long been watching actress Brooke Shields push the Latisse product on TV ads, promoting this drug as a way to thicken and lengthen your eyelashes. But did you listen to all the "ifs, ands and buts" in the hurried and very mumbled disclaimer? Something that can cause possible blindness, liver damage and permanent darkening under the eyes and on the iris of the eye makes me wonder if this kind of beauty is really worth the risk. Seems like I have plenty of company and I'm glad to hear them starting to speak up: doctors. Take a look:

Funny Cartoonists 26 Dec 2009

From Denny: Here's a sampling of what is happening over at The Social Poet this Saturday, enjoy! I just love editorial cartoons; they really capture the mood of the country. It's fun to look back over the year to see what was happening politically in a society as the cartoons often speak more truth than all the news articles which are often funded by some lobby. At the very least cartoons give us the public reactions to what our politicians are doing - or claim to be doing. :) Take a look:

Good News: Rudolph the Blind and Deaf Teacher Dog

From Denny: A sweet heart-warming story of a throw away dog from a breeder. Because the dog was deaf and blind the breeder considered the animal worthless and so abandoned it, consigning it to living loveless in a cage. Another woman saw this sad treatment and chose to adopt Rudolph. In her spare time, she took Rudolph around to school children, successfully teaching them tolerance and compassion for those who are different from us.

Good News: Kid Creates Pet Food Bank 4 Economic Crisis

From Denny: This has to be one proud mother of this nine-year-old boy named Zach Wilson in Central Florida whose passion to help animals created this animal food bank! This year of 2009 has been a troubled one for Americans, losing jobs, losing homes and forced to lose their pets because they can no longer afford to feed them. Tough choices all around.

Zach saw on the news that over 53,000 people in Florida had lost their homes this year and abandoned their pets as a result of job and home losses. So, he decided maybe people would keep their pets if they had help feeding them. It turned out to be a fabulous idea, well embraced by the charitable givers and those in need in his area. His idea has expanded across the nation to help other pets about to be abandoned by their desperate owners. Take a look:

Sickle Cell Anemia May be Cured From Stem Cell Research

From Denny: One of the ugliest diseases to get is sickle cell anemia often found in African-Americans and those of Middle Eastern descent. People are born with it. Up until recently it was like getting handed a death warrant the day you were born. Fortunately, researchers have made great strides in treating the disease so that patients can look forward to a long and healthy life, something many of them thought was never attainable.

Funny Christmas Quotes and More Holiday Fun

From Denny: Here's an excerpt and a sampling of this week's Cheeky Quote Day post over at my other humorous blog, The Social Poets, enjoy! Just so you won't miss out on more grins, there's a link at the end of this post to take you there. :)

5 Funny Christmas Quotes

* The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. - George Carlin

* Christmas is a time when kids tell Santa what they want and adults pay for it. Deficits are when adults tell the government what they want and their kids pay for it. - Richard Lamm

* Christmas at my house is always at least six or seven times more pleasant than anywhere else. We start drinking early. And while everyone else is seeing only one Santa Claus, we'll be seeing six or seven. – W. C. Fields

* Mail your packages early so the post office can lose them in time for Christmas. – Johnny Carson

* Let me see if I've got this Santa business straight. You say he wears a beard, has no discernible source of income and flies to cities all over the world under cover of darkness? You sure this guy isn't laundering illegal drug money? - Tom Armstrong

Funny Christmas Story

Saying the Holiday Prayer

A four-year-old boy who was asked to return thanks before Christmas dinner. The family members bowed their heads in expectation. He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, naming them one by one. Then he thanked God for Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food.

He gave thanks for the turkey, the dressing, the fruit salad, the cranberry sauce, the pies, the cakes, even the Cool Whip. Then he paused, and everyone waited ... and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, "If I thank God for the broccoli, won't he know that I'm lying?"

Then there's the "local" version of the famous Christmas classic "'Twas the Night Before Christmas."

The Night Before Christmas in Brooklyn, New York

'Twas the night before Christmas,
Da whole house was mella,
Not a creature was strirrin',
Cuz I had a gun unda da pilla.

When up on da roof
I heard somethin' pound,
I sprung to da window,
To scream, "YO! Keep it down!"

When what to my
Wanderin' eyes should appear,
But da Don of all elfs,
And eight friggin' reindeer!

Wit' slicked back black hair,
And a silk red suit,
Don Christopher wuz here,
And he brought da loot!

Wit' a slap to dare snouts
And a yank on dare manes,
He cursed and he shouted
And he called dem by name

"Yo Tony, Yo Frankie,
Yo Vinny, Yo Vito,
Ay Joey, Ay Paulie,
Ay Pepe, Ay Guido!"

As I drew out my gun
And hid by da bed,
He flew troo da winda
And slapped me 'side da head.

"What da hell you doin'
Pullin' a gun on da Don?
Now all you're gettin' is coal,
You friggin' moron!"

Den pointin' a fat finga
Right unda my nose,
He twisted his pinky ring,
And up da chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh,
Obscenities screamin',
Away dey all flew,
Before he troo dem a beatin'.

Den I heard him yell out,
What I did least expect,
"Merry Friggin' Christmas to all,
And yous better show some respect!

Hidden Dangers of Radiation Exposure Causing Later Life Cancers

From Denny: Well, looks like the medical community is beginning to confess finally that a lot of their common tests are not as safe as they think. Perhaps this excessive "cover your butt" testing came out of a broken health care system.

And the way the insurance lobbyists are winning on Capitol Hill to avoid any real health care reform in America, it sure looks like we need to guard our own health far more zealously. At least we are getting some honesty out of our doctors as to the true risk factors of some of these test. It does make me wonder if this is a high contributing factor as to why we see so much cancer in America, even among children.

Cardiologist Dr. Rita Redberg claims commonly performed CT scans are exposing patients to more radiation than previously thought. Take a look:

Debunking Skincare Myths, How Can I Look Good?

From Denny: Here's some great advice from a doctor about choosing skin care products that will moisturize during these winter months as opposed to clog your pores. Proper products combined with a consistent skin care regime produces great looking skin for a long time, causing your peers to wonder about your real age!

Remember to stay out of the sun and tanning beds as it plays havoc on your skin for years to come. Also, vitamin C products are great as topical applications for giving you that radiant skin we all desire, helping to repair and nourish at the same time.

Unexpected Side Benefits: Avoiding Cancer Thru Bone Meds

From Denny: While this is still new in the research, it is quite promising to have discovered that bone medications to prevent osteoporosis have this unique effect of preventing breast cancer. Incredibly good news for women with a family history of breast cancer.

This is like a medication with good side effects for a change. Who knew? Doctors are still waiting to do a proper study to figure out how it all works. Until then it sure takes a load off of many women's minds.

Wanna Melt Body Fat? Cold Melts Fat, Go Green

From Denny: I long ago noticed that when the weather is colder it's easier for me to lose weight than in the summer when it's hot and humid. Dialing back a bit on the calories like only two meals a day and maybe tea or a light snack at night does the trick for weight loss in cooler months. Why? Your body works harder in cold weather to stay warm and uses up those calories.

My latest trick has been to turn off the house heat in winter - mainly because ever since Hurricane Katrina five years ago the prices for car and home insurance have skyrocketed, reasonable deductibles of $1,000 has zoomed up to $17,000 to $28,000, so have prices for energy, food and gas for the car and property taxes.

Basically, the Republicans sloughed off centralized cheaper taxes onto the states forcing the locals to go up on literally everything. That and under President Bush they did nothing to regulate the insurance industry from raping and pillaging people here on the Gulf Coast. Only this past year has this insanity of no regulation and high prices swept all across America impacting everyone now.

We've been paying outrageous prices for five years and finally something had to give, so it was heating the house. So, my husband and I took the economic challenge as just another grin to lose a small bit of extra weight. Besides, the food is sooooo good in south Louisiana that it is easy to put on weight especially during the holiday season. It seems like we are always dieting to stay ahead of "the curves." :)

Now, I do live in south Louisiana where the weather rarely gets below 25 degrees F. so keep that one in mind in case you decide to turn off your house heat. Our house holds the heat well and maintains a temperature about 20 to 30 degrees above the outside temperature, making the house about 50 to 60 degrees F.

One of my other goals is that I was trying to prepare us to move out of state to a much colder state, getting us used to the cold. I've since noticed a real metabolism benefit, a win-win! :) Also noticed we no longer suffer from colds and sinus conditions like everyone else around here. Our bodies seem to be thanking us for choosing to be less comfortable because it has made us healthier.

Now along comes this new medical technique of literally melting fat with extreme cold and it sounds intriguing - especially since it does not involve surgery. Surgery always brings risks from bacteria and response to anesthesia. The technique uses extreme cold to literally melt the body fat from within under the skin. It isn't recommended for people suffering from obesity thought they don't say why. It seems to work the best with those relatively close to their ideal body weight. Over a two to six month period, the body naturally eliminates the excess now melted fat. Pretty cool idea! Just wonder how safe it is - as these new techniques rarely go without side effects. Well, I guess you can always try my "melt off the fat" technique... :)

Winterize Your Skin AND Your Wardrobe on a Budget

From Denny: It's funny. The past few days I've been going through my closet to assess and get it back into focus again - especially my husband's area as men just don't much care whether you can get the vacuum cleaner under the hanging shirts and if the shoes are all on the slide out shoe rack.

And, since I have four meows at our house, it's a regular hunt for cat fur in the most unlikely places, like the occasional snoozers in the back of our huge walk-in master closet. People are always surprised we have pets as there is no evidence or smell of them. I'm lucky that three are mostly outdoor kitties, the same three that were Hurricane Katrina rescues that adopted me, deciding to train me for future easy food... :)

I've trained my cats - most of the time - to help contain the fur - to l-o-v-e fresh clean warm towels in their little casitas (little house in Spanish) which translates into willow laundry baskets made in China and sold at the hardware store Lowe's. Anyway, I ran across these recent videos about going through your closet and how to re-think your current wardrobe on a budget and thought you might enjoy viewing these too. Some great ideas!
